Geography
Where is Maryland in the US?
Maryland is a small Mid-Atlantic state wedged between the Northeast and the South — here's how it fits into the country, and how its 23 counties fit together.
Maryland's location & borders
Maryland sits on the Atlantic coast in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, roughly halfway between New York and the Carolinas. It's bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware to the east, Virginia to the south, and West Virginia to the west — with Washington, D.C. carved out of its southern border along the Potomac River. The Mason–Dixon line forms most of its northern boundary with Pennsylvania.

At its narrowest — near Hancock in Washington County — Maryland is barely 2 miles wide from the Pennsylvania line to the Potomac River. The Chesapeake Bay cuts the state roughly in half lengthwise, so most north-south travel between the Western Shore and Eastern Shore crosses the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (US-50) at Sandy Point near Annapolis.
