Maryland sits on the Mid-Atlantic coast, bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Virginia and West Virginia to the south and west, and Washington, D.C. carved out of its southern border. Despite ranking 42nd of the 50 states by land area, Maryland is one of the most geographically varied — the Chesapeake Bay splits it into an Eastern and Western Shore, the Piedmont rolls through the middle of the state, and the Appalachian ridges rise in the far west near Cumberland.
